Once you have established that connection then whenever you go there it's not like your there alone because you can always shoot the **** with the bartender. If there is one thing I have learned about bars is that one of the most powerful tools are the bartenders. There basic job is to keep you happy. Try to get to know your bartender at a place where there is a good amount of talent showing up.
