So, when he got back, we both took out our credit cards and, split the bill. Based on that, I figured he wanted to go dutch otherwise, he would have paid for it. So I assumed he had paid for it or put his credit card down. The hostess came back to pick up the bill folder and realised it was still unpaid so she placed the bill folder back.

I won't guarantee this or anything but I'm just saying this is what has worked for me.
