Honestly, it sounds as though you are not a match for each other, as he is not fulfilling your needs (emotional support, etc.) and is generally not at all acting like a boyfriend or partner, you are not meeting his needs (which appear to include independence), and neither of you is able to communicate in such a way that the other is able to be understanding and supportive in some kind of mutually agreed upon compromise.
